The Get Lit curriculum trains teachers to use memorization and recitation of classic poetry as a launching pad for teen-created spoken word responses. Fusing the two forms of expression into compelling performances, these standards-based lessons transform students who have yet to discover their potential into soulful scholars with a much deeper grasp of poetry, themselves, and others.
The program was audited by World-renowned arts evaluator, Professor James Catterall and his UCLA team. For six months, his team followed four classes in Watts, Compton, South Central and Long Beach area schools.
Their findings concluded that Get Lit’s in-school curriculum is “immensely effective” and the program was given a “resounding endorsement.”
“Get Lit promotes good thinking, thoughtful words, high student engagement, and improved student motivation. Students say they find a voice and learn about themselves through poetry”
